Graduate (Master)

UMBC Students

The Graduate School at UMBC may offer conditional admission to applicants who do not have the required TOEFL or IELTS score. Applicants must meet all other requirements for admission to UMBC (including the GRE, unless waived by the department).

Conditional admission is available for some Master’s degree programs only. Conditional admission is not available for any PhD programs.

Which programs offer conditional admission?

You can view a complete list of graduate programs, admission requirements, and application deadlines here. Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator listed on the website or Ms. Kathy Ruth, International Admissions Specialist, to ask if conditional admission is available for a specific degree program.

If you are interested in a graduate degree program that does not offer conditional admission, the ELI can help you to improve your English skills and prepare for the TOEFL, IELTS and GRE exams. You may study at the ELI until you gain admission to your chosen degree program at UMBC or another university.

Application Process

Admission to the ELI and conditional admission to the Graduate School at UMBC are separate:

Step 1: Contact the Graduate School to verify that conditional admission is available.

Step 2: Submit your application to the Graduate School.

Step 3: Send an email to Ms. Kathy Ruth to explain that you are requesting conditional admission.

Step 4: If you are approved, submit your application to the ELI. The ELI will issue your Form I-20 so that you may apply for a F-1 student visa.

Step 5: Study at the ELI until you complete Level 6 classes with grades of A or B (no TOEFL or IELTS is required). You may begin full-time graduate study after you pass ELI Level 6 or achieve the required TOEFL or IELTS score for your program. Some programs will permit you to begin part-time graduate study while you complete ELI Level 6.
