Short-Term Customized Programing

Special programs are designed for groups of students, teachers, or professionals seeking English language instruction professional development in an immersion setting. These intensive programs are designed for participants seeking to develop their English language skills through customized programming. We coordinate directly with partners through all stages of planning and execution to develop programming to fit their academic, cultural, and/or professional development goals.  Participants of all proficiency levels and backgrounds are welcome and we are always looking for new partners!

English Language, Public Administration, and Leadership Training Program

This program is designed for professionals who are involved in government, business, and law from around the world. The program can be delivered to meet a wide range of needs, including intensive professional training in English communication skills, professional development, methodologies, and educational training in public administration and leadership.

We have administered this program with:

  • Designed for Chief Civil Inspectors and County Executives.
  • Duration: One year
  • Special Program Content:
    Improve inspectors’ language and research skills through content-based instruction and mentoring; learn interaction strategies in working with public administration and in leadership roles; and practice effective professional exchanges with members of university faculty, students, and the community.
  • Designed for professionals working at Totani in Japan
  • Duration: Four weeks
  • Special Program Content:
    Business English; learn interaction strategies in working with public administration and in leadership roles

  • Designed for Children’s Librarians from Russia
  • Duration: One week
  • Special Program Content:
    Congressional meetings with House and Senate leaders; library visits; and effective professional exchanges with members of university faculty, students, and the community

  • Designed for judges from Estonia
  • Duration: One week
  • Special Program Content:
    Congressional meetings with House and Senate leaders; visits with State and Federal judges; trial observations; and effective professional exchanges with members of university faculty, students, and the community
  • Designed for busy professionals and recent college graduates who are interested in exploring the TESOL field as a future career opportunity.
  • Duration: Can be customized, either in-person or online.
  • Special Program Content:
    Course participants learn and practice a wide variety of methods and techniques for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Through face-to-face or online instruction and weekly discussions, participants explore best practices for teaching English as a second and a foreign language and learn how to create an effective, communicative language classroom for students of varied ages and levels. The course uses a practical, hands-on approach that includes classroom observations, tutoring sessions, and classroom teaching. The total number of hours required to complete these courses is 100+ hours.

This program is designed for academic faculty and research professionals who are interested in gaining an in-depth overview of current teaching methodologies used in the United States. The program can be tailored to meet the specific needs that may come with the unique characteristics and literacies of each discipline.

  • Duration: Five weeks
  • Special Program Content:
    Enhance participants’ expertise in their teaching discipline and equip them with a deeper understanding of best practices in teaching methodologies, lesson planning, and the use of technology in teaching; benchmark effective teaching and class management methods
  • Designed for the faculty and senior students in the Emergency Medical Services field
  • Duration: One week
  • Special Program Content:
    Shadowing at University of Maryland, Shock Trauma Center; ride-along on a local ambulance; learn U.S. cultures and lifestyles

Designed for international university students who are interested in American English learning as well as community outreach activities, this program combines language training with an inquiry-based content course related to community engagement and outreach. Participants do voluntary work to have hands-on experience and interact with local youth leaders to improve their communication skills in real-life situations. They are also encouraged to plan future projects that will benefit their own community.
