Driving in the United States is a fantastic way to see the area and to get around in your daily life. Anyone who drives in the U.S. needs a drivers license and this can be a very different process depending on your experience driving.

If you are getting your very first driver’s license there are many steps to follow. All drivers need to complete a driver education program and gain experience with a supervising driver. After that, new drivers need to follow the three levels of licensing to be able to drive in the United States. These levels are:
To begin the processes for a driver’s license or identification card you need to complete the following steps and have each of the documents required:
- You will need to submit an electronic SAVE Verification Request Form online. You can complete the form by clicking here.
- A foreign issued license may be accompanied by an international driver’s license or translated into English. Click here for a list of MVA approved translators.
- You will also need to complete a 3-Hour Alcohol and Drug Education Program. Please click here to find the program providers.

To receive a license, you will need:
- Passport
- I- 94 demonstrating the most current entry in the U.S. (click here to get this form)
- Social security card or illegible letter (The ELI can provide this letter upon request).
- At least two documents as proof of your residential/local address (ex: Checking or savings account statement, utility, telephone, or cable/satellite TV bill)
